Electrics

  • A refit/upgrade was initiated 2020 which began with replacing 24 volt service batteries with 10kWh of Lithium (LFP). Stage 2 with this process was to install the PV panels and chargers.
  • With the LFP stage one operational, experience shows that under sail the trickle
consumption of 24 volts with inverter on is 170 - 200 Watts. The 12 volt service battery may be replaced by 24 to 12 volt DC-DC converter. It is available but not yet installed (100A/12V).
  • The engine and genset has its own dedicated 12 volts batteries. The 12 Volt
engine battery is charged by its own generator/charger on the engine and by shore power charger.
  • The same generator also charges the 12 volt service battery via a splitter. The starter battery is also charged by the main shore power (or by a genset) as for the service group.
  • For safety items such as bilge pumps and navigation, a partially separated PB group is used. It also acts as safety for the engine generator against current dumping when the BMS disconnects charging to LFP bank. This group ensures that the bilge pumps are always powered regardless of shore power or service group is online or not.
  • A complete auxiliary charging refit (primary charging is PV panels) would include a >100 amp 24 volt charger driven by shore or by the genset (reduces running time and is moderate C/4 LFP charge rate). Potentially a similar amperage unit on the Yanmar with smart control.
  • The genset is an Onan 9kW unit - It has low hours but as discovered has had a water leak at some point in its life resulting in the bottom of the soundproofing being rusted. An ongoing refit is well documented & available for all serious buyers on request.
  • 'Artemis' also has its own Wi-Fi network allowing anyone to access WI-FI from other sources. The external antenna is a long range high power unit allowing for good general access.
  • When outside of WiFi a 3/4G router is available offering the same functionality with a data-card.
  • Engine charger 24 volts - Yanmar
  • Engine charger 12 volts - Yanmar
  • Charger 24 volt - Dolphin - 40 Amp. Set for VRLA If set for GEL, LFP will be charged to higher SOC but the backup VRLA will not agree with this. Charges both the engine & service battery.
  • Genset Onan - 9kW - 2,800 Hours - 230 volts single phase. Fuel filter change - (2) 210730.
  • Inverter Victron 2kw - Pure sine (ideally this should be >3kw size)
  • Inverter - Victron 800W - Pure sine dedicated for freezer
  • Two batteries - Spares - Two spare 140Ah batteries are kept for possible installation in forepeak to power the thruster and windlass.

Communication

  • Artemis has its own WiFi network allowing anyone to access wifi from other sources. The external antenna is a long range high power unit allowing for good general access. When outside of WiFi a 3/4G router is available offering the same functionality with a data-card.

Navigation

Extensive work has been done to the electrical communication system and in particular to the navigation and communication electronics. There is now also a system schematic, facilitating any future work.

Particular focus has been made to make the system N2K (STNG) centric rather than Sea talk 1. Sea talk 2 has been removed and Sea talk HS is used between radar and displays.

The life of the two navigation computers has been extended by replacing the fluorescent backlighting with LED. Charts for the Med and Carribean are also included.

Accessing all navigation data to external computer is done via a USB interface. Open CPN makes makes use of this fully. It remains to be discovered how radar overlay can be included.

  • E120 Raymarine - Nav station - Master MFD with Med and Carib charts & has been upgraded with a LED backlight.
  • E80 Raymarine - Cockpit - As E120 but slave over Sea talk HS & has been upgraded with a LED backlight.
  • Radar - Raymarine - At the Mast - Digital radar with chart overlay.
  • Autopilot - Raymarine - SB Aft Lazarette S400 unit with inertial option. Drives the hydraulic pump on 24 Volts. Uses the P70 control head.

THE OWNERS COMMENTS / INFORMATION:

Our 'Artemis' is a 2004 Beneteau 57 comes with a a long list of options why the available models on the market vary but our beautiful yachts comes with all of the following for her new owners:

  • Artemis is the version with aft master cabin, two forward guest cabins and a crew cabin (with two bunk beds). It is a 2004 version with the darker cherry wood finish.
  • The rigging is the basic one lacking the inner stay for self-tacking jib. It is our preference as the genoa has the Facnor electrical roller furling, along the with the Spar-Craft in-mast furling main handling is very simple.
  • There are four electrical Lewmar winches, two model 66 for genoa and and two 48.
  • Artemis has been in private use only and according to the low engine hours - (Engine 3,135 Hours & a Genset with 2,800 Hours on the clocks)
  • 'Artemis' has the two standard 280 litres (Each) fuel tanks plus the optional forward fuel tank with accompanying transfer pump.
  • Water is stored in integrated tanks each side of bilge, totalling 1,000 Litres.
  • Water is heated by an electrical unit that also makes use of engine heat. The original and optional water maker was not ordered, instead an after market 160 Litre/Hourly unit was installed.
  • As for electronics - The full Raymarine set with two navigators (E80 and E120), digital radar, model 650 AIS with antenna splitter and 206 VHF with MMSI operation and dual handsets. The autopilot is also model 400/S3 with internal option installed. - It works flawlessly :).
  • Existing legacy ST290 analog instruments are still very useful. An autopilot remote is available as is a bracelet MOB system.
  • The control head was upgraded with the Raymarine P70 autopilot control head. During our ownership & the complexity of having a system from 20 years ago has been reduced by upgrading the communication core to Sea talk NG - (NMEA2000). A converter is included so that a laptop/PC with Open CPN can be used, - It works very well at the the same time the system structure has been documented, it was made out of necessity because no such existed.

Our refit / upgrade

  • Plans had at the top of the list replacement of the lead-acid batteries for the service. There is a level of added complexity as both 12 volts and 24 volts are used. As 24 volts has huge benefits, 12 volts is still the preferred voltage for many items
such as electronics. However the bulk of the heavy consumers are 24 volts. Hence the refit has begun by removing the lead acid cells and replacing with LFP, i.e.. Lithium iron phosphate. This is a very safe and stable chemistry (Virtually indestructible
safety wise) also has the characteristic to relatively well integrate with the nominal voltages of lead-acid legacy systems.
  • The electrical refit will be finished when the PV panels are installed and operational.
  • A useful experience from the current level of refit offer proof of potential independence from re-charging via shore or genset.
  • Steering on the Beneteau 57 is via a hydraulic system. It is one of the greatest benefits of a boat of this class. As a result the electro-hydraulic autopilot is part of the system from start and not an after-market item. This has offered much peace of mind on long hauls where hand steering under engine or sail could be a high load on the crew with a different system.
  • 'Artemis' has a retrofitted propeller of the three bladed Max-Prop type offering very good performance, both driven and automatically feathered under sail.
  • She also has a a custom made canvas cover is stored on the forepeak, this three piece unit completely covers her and leaves a small ventilation space.
  • Her teak decking is in as good condition as can be expected for its age and may see many more additional years of service. The grouting is standing proud but may be cut down if desired. The cabin top is is not dressed in teak, instead a huge two-piece sun mattress allows for sunbathing or stargazing for up to four persons. In addition to this there are additional custom made mattresses for the aft deck which is a very a comfortable place.
  • She also has factory fitted air-conditioning all in all there are five units, one for each cabin and for the saloon. These units are reversible, allowing for heating in addition to cooling as/when required.
